It's a Nice Day for a White Wedding

Wrapping up my month-long series of color theme posts could be a controversial topic for some of you-is white a color, or the absence of color. Either way, there is nothing missing with these inspiring images.

Serenity Now!

I'm hard-core coveting this room I spied on Living, Etc. It just makes me sigh, and swoon, just a smidge.

Touch of Gray

Even though gray might "technically" be a shade of black, it's such a hot color right now that I thought it deserved it's own post!

Snowy Day

I woke up this morning and there was a pretty blanket of fresh white snow on the ground. Considering I'm about to brave the cold and the snow and head out for some photo fun, meetings and warm food, I thought I'd start the morning off right with this gorgeous snowy and inspiring photograph by Tyler Nixon I found in File Magazine that makes me appreciate that cold and blustery thing called winter, and even look forward to getting out there in it!!

Are you down with Brown?

It's by far one of the most popular colors in weddings, interior design and fashion. It's the color of dirt and chocolate, many a girls natural hair color, and in all it's shades of glory, I have to say, brown is a color I never tire of...so please, enjoy my ode to the color brown.

Let the Sun Shine In

Yellow is a happy color, and for me, a color that reminds me of childhood. Yellow Schoolbuses, yellow #2 pencils, those yellow notepads, yellow falling leaves in Autumn, and mostly, the sun shining on me as I played outside without a care in the world. I remember picking buttercups and honeysuckle and the smell a warm summer day. Pastel and buttery yellow make me think of early Spring and Easter egg hunts with my Sunday School. I guess yellow brings out the kid in me. So come on, get happy, and let the yellow wash over you and brighten your day!

Orange. I got nothin' catchy.

Orange was never one of my favorite colors, but in recent years, I have developed an affinity for the color named for one of my all time favorite fruits. Orange is the accent color in my home office-it adds a burst of color and it's fun and playful. Orange, in all it's citrusy goodness has been hiding itself amoung popular wedding colors for years-peach, salmon, persimmon, pumpkin, squash, rust. Whatever you call it, orange is a great way to make a splash at any style wedding.

Seeing Red

Red is everywhere, and it has so many meanings. Red is hot, red is danger, red is power, red is good luck, red is anger, red is lust, red is forbidden, red is wholesome and All-American-red is many things to many people. I've gathered some hot and happy hues of this fiery color, what has YOU seeing red?

Think Pink

When you think Pink, does it conjure up all sorts of colorful, girly imagery in your mind-like Blush and Bashful, Julie Roberts wedding colors in Steel Magnolias? I love pink, and think that pink is more than a princess color, with so many incarnations, it can be chic and sassy, or soft and elegant. I have guy friends who aren't afraid to wear pink, and my husband turns pink in the sun, or if he's embarrassed. Pink is all around us, and there is more to this color than meets the eye. After all, you know the saying we're all pink on the inside? What shade of pink are you?

Anthropologie, I've missed you....

Lately, I've taken a hiatus from clothes shopping-we've spent money on work expenses and redoing our office, but I found myself back on Anthropologie's website, and then later, driving past the store and gazing at the open door and tantalizing window display (it was a coincidence, I swear, it's not like I drunk dial the store and babble nervously and incoherently about our past). But Nic whisked me home and distracted me with household chores. I'd been doing so well without Anthropologie in my life. But we had been so good together, they had clothing that made me look and feel pretty, and I doled out oodles of cash in return. We were a good couple, Anthropologie and I, and I never meant to quit you, Anthro, I just got lost this winter with another mistress, Interior Design.

I had been loyal to Anthropologie for years, one of my very few long term clothing store relationships. I'm that kinda girl-I find a store that sells things that I like, that hold up for more than a season, and fit my body in a flattering fashion, and I hold onto them like grim death. Many girls out there can identify-shopping can be depressing if you aren't perfectly proportioned, and even if you have a body most would kill for, the wrong fit at a store can make you cry yourself to sleep and skipping anything that looks or smells like a carb. If you are like me, you develop a close personal relationship with stores and become fiercely loyal to them. I think that's why so many woman love Anthropologie-the laid back casanova who-never-tries-to-hard-to-court-you-of women's fashion. Great clothing, and the styles miraculously fit all shapes and sizes of lady, Pricey, but not elitist, and you can usually scour a sale. I have had a bit of a love affair with Anthropologie. They've bewitched me with their clever non-marketing and couture yard sale-European flea market flair, despite my common sense that they know exactly how to court girls like me. I get in there, or shop online, and I can easy fork over hundreds of dollars without flinching.

So as I find myself longing for Anthropologie, Here are ten dresses that have me falling in love all over again, but that happen to pretty darn perfect for everyday Spring/Summer wear, but also as a bridesmaid dress, or wedding guest dress. Just ten more reasons why I love Anthropologie, in a strictly platonic way.

I guess that's why they call it the BLUES......

You know the saying..Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue. The color blue and weddings are like Peanut Butter and Jelly. A Tiffany engagement ring, one of the most coveted items on any besotted ladies list comes in a little blue box. Blue is such a great wedding color, namely because there are so many versatile shades, but also because it can stand alone as the star of the show (behind the bride of course) or it can blend well as a supporting character among just about any other color. I could go all Bubba on you naming all the colors that work well with blue, but I won't bore you or make you read it. Just enjoy the eye candy and have a blue day!

I hate to brag, but

Aren't my nephews the cutest boys EVER? I took these over the Holidays-the boys finally fit into the overalls Nic and I bought them, and they were so adorable, I had to stop taking pictures and squish their little bellies! Gotta love babies....

Brandon, sticking his tongue out at the camera. I don't think this is intentional, though

Ethan, the one with the biggest 'tude, looking like he's gonna punch me in the face. He didn't, but he always has his hand clenched in a teeny tiny fist!

Paint it BLACK

When planning a wedding, one of the most important and expressive components is the color palette. The use of color can articulate a particular vision, convey emotion, display one's culture or beliefs, and at the very least, make a wedding cohesive.

Color can affect our mood, it can change the way we think of things or view things, and by experimenting with different color combinations, you can see the color in a whole new light.
Lately, the trend of steel grey and mustard marigold seems to be gaining momentum in popularity. Pale Peony Pink, Soft Subtle Spring Green, Creamy Dreamy Whites, Rustic Browns, Poppy Yellows and Oranges, Chili Pepper Reds and Bold Turqoise Blues...the list goes on and on in wedding trends and classic color choices. I remember years back when every wedding I photographed as second shooter seemed to be lilac and white...I wonder what's next in the world of color and weddings.

That being said, I think I'll start this little series of New Year posts on Color with a basic tone that can be dressed up or down, and can be the spring board for a very glamorous and sophisticated event: BLACK

New Ideas for Old Recipes

I am the sort of cook that tends to never write anything down or stick with a recipe, IF i follow one. I have a vague idea of what I'm making, but I sort of cook off the cuff, so to speak. My mother has an array of delicious dishes that I grew up with, and I tend to long for those homemade favorites, especially when the weather is colder. I guess I get more nostalgic in a colder climate, because I have been nagging my mother to get me her notebook of recipes. She happily obliged, and she handed over this tattered folder chock full of her family recipes, dating back to who knows when in her family. The notebook has cooking stains, and the pages are starting to turn to yellow, and crinkle a little around the edges from age and use. My mom is old school. So old school, that she rocks a punch key typewriter, Betamax and a turntable with a huge assortment of vintage vinyl. She isn't a hipster, they bit HER style, and if she's the trendsetter in all things retro, you might spy those cool coffee shop jockeys rockin' some cotton stirrup pants, kitten embroidered sweatshirts with a coordinating dickie sewn in. She recently got her very first computer, a mac laptop, and has decided to leave her comfort zone of 19th century technology and blaze headfirst into the 21st century. Since she's becoming a thoroughly modern mother, I thought it might be nice to take all her recipes and put them into a custom printed, modern cookbook for her. Part of me wishes I had thought of this in time for the holidays, but what the heck, I'll throw caution to the wind and get her this little present just because.

Doing what I do, I could easily lay out a fully custom book, have it printed and have it be a one-of-a-kind original. But, I'm busy, and a tad lazy when it comes to typesetting a whole cookbook along with the entire overall design, so, I went to Tastebook and had them lend me a hand. Tastebook is so easy. Ridiculously easy, and I can attest that many online publication services are frustrating and difficult. What's cool about Tastebook, is that they also have recipes you can use from sites like Epicurious and Bon Appetit. They have easy to use templates and provide you with space for a story or introduction, pictures and more. And the result is a real live cookbook! I noticed a few days ago that one of my favorite bloggers, Mac & Cheese, also found Tastebook and wrote about it, which is really cool. Hopefully, Tastebook is a trend that catches on, and helps many of us modern peeps repackage our childhood nostalgia into a professional quality heirloom to pass on to our children, or give back to our parents.
